Google committed to invest $15 billion on data centres and computing power in Malaysia over the next two years, supporting its next phase of growth and catering to rising digital demand. The company stated the investment in 2027 and 2028 would go towards delivering energy-efficient data centre campuses, training approximately 800,000 Malaysians, bolstering local water security and adding more than 1GW of clean energy capacity to Malaysia’s national grid. Google explained the infrastructure would provide the computing capacity needed to run homegrown, next-generation digital and AI applications, while powering its Maps, Chrome and Search services which are used daily by millions across the Asia-Pacific region. Its investment builds on a 15-year presence in Malaysia. The company recently opened a first data centre campus in the state of Selangor and plans to build two new sites. Google expects the new sites to add $1.1 billion to the economy and support more than 37,000 jobs per year during the construction phase. Ruth Porat, President and CIO, said Google is committed to growing its presence responsibly, delivering lasting value to Malaysia’s people and economy. “This investment aligns with Malaysia’s development priorities, providing the foundational computing capacity to deliver the upside of innovation across the country while adding local power and water resources as our operations scale.” YB Gobind Singh Deo, Malaysian Minister of Digital, said Google’s approach aligns with the government’s Digital 2030 action plan to create an ecosystem which “strengthens technological capabilities, protects public resources and empowers people”. Malaysia has emerged as an attractive spot to invest for global technology companies, with Oracle, Amazon, Alibaba and ByteDance all doing so.
