VodafoneThree is claiming a world first with the London deployment of Ericsson's AIR 3266 massive MIMO radio in its commercial 5G standalone network. The radio's combination of 5G midband TDD massive MIMO technology with support for up to 400MHz bandwidth allows the operator to make greater use of its midband spectrum, increasing, it says, its 5G capacity and coverage as deployment scales up. VodafoneThree also claims the radio delivers energy savings of 30% or more on its predecessors. Ericsson radio access network (RAN) gear is now to be found at more than 10,000 VodafoneThree sites across the UK. (See [Why VMO2 isn't afraid of VodafoneThree's monster 5G footprint](https://www.lightreading.com/5g/why-vmo2-isn-t-afraid-of-vodafonethree-s-monster-5g-footprint).) Fixed wireless access (FWA) will generate more than a third of consumer cellular traffic by 2035 as connections grow, according to new projections from Finland's Nokia. Of course, the bulk of the vendor's [Global Network Traffic Report 2026](https://www.nokia.com/insights/global-network-traffic-report/) concerns itself with AI, and specifically how the too-big-for-its-boots technology-monster will massively add to the burden carried by the world's data networks: The report predicts that AI will drive nearly half of all global traffic in 2035, with connected machines playing a large part in this (as opposed to regurgitated student essays and execrable online posters advertising village fayres). Total network traffic will nearly quadruple from 2026 levels to almost 3,789 exabytes per month by 2035, reckons Nokia. The European boss of Boldyn Networks, Brendan O'Reilly, has been named chairman of Smart City Roma's board of directors. The [Smart City Roma project](https://www.comune.roma.it/eventi-resources/cms/documents/Roma%20Smart%20City_Il%20Piano.pdf) includes the deployment of more than 2,200 5G small cells, connectivity across Rome's metro network, public Wi-Fi in 100 squares, IoT sensors and smart cameras. AccelerComm, a UK-based provider of IP solutions for 5G non-terrestrial networks, is working with an unnamed Tier 1 mobile network operator on a project that seeks to use AI to make 5G basestations more energy-efficient and less complex. During the noughties Paul took time out from his page proofs and marker pens to run a small hotel with his other half in the wilds of Exmoor. There he developed a range of skills including carrying cooked breakfasts, lying to unwanted guests and stopping leaks with old towels. Now back, slightly befuddled, in the world of online journalism, Paul is thoroughly engaged with the modern world, regularly firing up his VHS video recorder and accidentally sending text messages to strangers using a chipped Nokia feature phone.
