Cox

- Pro forma

Cable Technology Finance Broadband 5G News Spectrum overhauls operating model in bid to reignite growth 'We recognize that we have not generated the customer growth and performance we expect,' said Spectrum CEO Chris Winfrey, noting that the company is being redesigned 'at every level.' Jeff Baumgartner , Senior Editor , Light Reading November 6, 2026 4 Min Read (Source: Charter Communications/Spectrum) With the Charter-Cox merger squared away, Spectrum said it is implementing a "new operating model" aimed at creating a simpler, more effective organization that can pursue the bigger goal of returning the company to growth. "We're announcing a new path forward for Charter to address a more competitive and complex market," Spectrum CEO Chris Winfrey said on Friday's Q3 earnings call. "We recognize that we have not generated the customer growth and performance we expect," he explained, noting that the new structure represents a "fundamental redesign of how we operate at every level." He said the overhaul will involve a reformatting of the company's value proposition and a fresh go-to-market strategy that will lead with broadband. There will also be more attention given to churn and customer service, and how the company can build value around its existing products and bundles. Spectrum didn't provide a ton of other specifics today. Winfrey said more will be shared soon, promising that Spectrum "will grow our Internet sales rate." Related: 'Spectrum Day' is underway in former Cox markets But that plan is taking shape after former Vodafone UK and Frontier Communications exec Nick Jeffery joined Spectrum as COO on September 1. Last month, he introduced a flatter, simpler operating structure designed to fulfill what he's referring to as " The Great Cable Comeback ." Winfrey described Jeffery as a "change agent" that is forcing Charter to rethink how it competes. But there's still no telling when Spectrum believes it will turn the corner, especially when it comes to broadband subscriber growth. "We're not providing any guidance or outlook for exactly when we return to growth," Winfrey said. "But I want to be very clear: That's the objective; that's the determination of success." Spectrum is far from alone in this endeavor. Comcast is undergoing a major restructuring focused on making the company more agile, but one that is also resulting in layoffs . Under-penetrated Cox footprint 'a big opportunity' Part of the path forward is improving performance in the Cox footprint, which adds about 11 million passings and 5 million customers. (Source: Spectrum Q3 2026 earnings presentation) "The lower starting penetration [in the Cox markets] is a big opportunity," Winfrey said. Winfrey said improvements across broadband, mobile and video are already being seen in those markets following the launch of Charter's pricing and packaging in the Cox footprint starting September 16. Notably, Spectrum added 68,000 mobile lines in the legacy Cox markets, more than double the year-ago gain of 32,000. Spectrum shed 77,000 broadband subs in Q3 in the Cox markets versus a loss of 62,000 a year earlier and a loss of 103,000 in the prior quarter. The company also lost 39,000 video subs in Q3, improved from a year-ago loss of 51,000. Related: Charter-Cox deal is a wrap, with 'Spectrum' brand to take over in mid-September Alongside the $1 billion in transaction synergies expected from the combo, Winfrey noted that Spectrum is targeting an incremental $2 billion in annualized run-rate operating expense savings over the next 18 months. Much of that will come from the elimination of projects that don't contribute to broadband growth, he said. It's not yet clear how many layoffs will be coming from the resulting reorganization of the company and its reduction of layers. But Winfrey said the savings are not targeted at front-line service and sales employees. Pro forma subscriber and financial snapshot On a pro forma basis (the combination of legacy Charter and legacy Cox), Spectrum lost 233,000 broadband subs (-228,000 residential and -5K business), versus a year-ago loss of 171,000, for a grand total of 34.31 million (32.28 million residential and 2.02 million business). The combined company added 508,000 mobile lines (489,000 residential and 19,000 business) for a total of 13.45 million (12.99 million residential and 460,000 business). The pro forma company lost 77,000 video subs (66,000 residential and 11,000 business), improved from a year-ago loss of 121,000, for a total of 13.8 million (13.29 million residential and 503,000 business). Pro forma total revenues dropped 1.5% to $16.50 billion. Internet revenues hit $7.09 billion, down from $7.36 billion a year earlier. The combined company added 390,000 passings in Q3, ending the quarter with 70.7 million. Charter shares were down $3.35 (-2.66%) to $122.51 each in Friday afternoon trading. Charter shares are down 41% year-to-date.
