HKT pulls out of US under FCC pressure – report
Another Chinese telco is reportedly leaving the US as Hong Kong-based HKT is said to be withdrawing from the country after pressure from the FCC, which has in the past placed prohibitions on major Chinese telcos on the grounds of national security and law enforcement.

HKT, Hong Kong's biggest telco, has agreed to end its US domestic and international services.
The FCC
ordered the company in October last year
to show cause why it should not revoke the right of HKT and its subsidiaries to provide services in the US. Now, Reuters
reports
that under a consent decree, HKT has agreed to stop international and domestic telecom services to and within the US.
The telco must submit an application to the FCC within 30 days to discontinue those services and cease its US operations by September 1, 2027, at the latest.
The FCC order is the latest action against China-based telcos on national security grounds. In this case it also cited HKT's links to the Chinese state via China Unicom. Beijing-controlled Unicom is an 18% shareholder in PCCW, HKT's 52% majority owner.
In the past seven years, the FCC has placed prohibitions on China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom, all on grounds of national security and law enforcement. It says the US-based operations of these Chinese firms were all vulnerable to exploitation and influence by the PRC government.
Largely symbolic
HKT has made no public comment but a spokesperson
told
the South China Morning Post the company remained "fully compliant with all applicable regulatory requirements."
PCCW is controlled by Richard Li, the son of 98–year-old Hong Kong tycoon Li Kai-shing. Li senior heads CK Hutchison Whampoa, the controlling shareholder of Hutchison Three, Hutchison Asia Telecom and Hutchison Telecom.
The move is largely symbolic. HKT's income overwhelmingly derives from its Hong Kong broadband, mobile and enterprise services. The impact will be felt through its international operating arm, PCCW Global, which offers international services to and from the US as well as domestic interstate services in 30 states, according to the FCC.
China's Ministry of Commerce called on the FCC to withdraw the order and complained that the commission had ignored representations from PRC officials and was "severely undermining" China-US trade relations.
HKT's Hong Kong stock declined 1.2% Monday.
