LIVE FROM UNWRAPPED DIGITAL INDUSTRIES: AWS senior manager for solutions architecture, telecom vendors, Mauro Matteo ( pictured ), said private networks are gaining traction across logistics and manufacturing sectors but warned brownfield equipment and skills gaps remain barriers to wider deployment. Speaking during a Mobile World Live Unwrapped Digital Industries keynote, Matteo said growth in private network deployments is “real”, pointing to Amazon’s own logistics operations, where around 1 million robots are connected across multiple fulfilment centres. He added connectivity is increasingly important in complex hubs such as ports and airports, where operators, carriers, truckers and passengers share the same environment and network reliability can directly affect safety and operations. “When something goes down, the first concern when network isn’t reliable, so to speak, the primarily concern is about safety of operations,” he said. However, Matteo cautioned against treating private 5G as a standalone answer for industrial connectivity. “It’s not a single technology solution that will win it all,” he said, noting some applications remain better suited to wired connections, while others can use Wi-Fi or private 5G. “5G is a tool and not a destination,” Matteo added, arguing connectivity should ultimately become largely invisible to users when it is working properly. Brownfield barrier According to Matteo, the biggest obstacles to deployment are found beyond the network. He said radios and standards are “mature” but argued technology barriers are often “connected to the to the physical equipment”. Transport hubs such as ports and airports frequently rely on existing cranes, vehicles and control systems that “couldn’t be retrofitted” to support new connectivity. “When the physical equipment doesn’t allow for a network to be on the device, there is so much less that can be done,” he explained. Skills are another issue, with Matteo urging organisations to “double down” on investing in people capable of building and operating increasingly complex technology environments. Cost is a factor, he said, but “not a blocker”, with the focus instead being on improving return on investment. Click here to access the full Unwrapped Digital Industries agenda.
