Overview of AMR Progressive Power Control
With the current power control algorithm, voice quality and dropped call rate cannot be
optimised at the same time. This means that the received signal quality (RXQUAL)
thresholds have to be selected so that a trade-off between voice quality and system
capacity is achieved.
AMR Progressive Power Control (PPC) provides a mechanism to change the RXQUAL
thresholds for AMR calls depending on the used power level. In other words, it is
possible to favour power increase with low power levels and avoid it with higher power
levels, thereby reducing overall interference.
AMR PPC (BSS20776) is a licence key controlled software product that consists of two
separately controlled functionalities:
• AMR PPC for MS power control (uplink)
• AMR PPC for BTS power control (downlink)
If the licence expires, the normal power control algorithm is used also for AMR calls.
Benefits of AMR Progressive Power Control
• reduced interference in the network because of better power distribution
• better speech codec distribution because of better quality distribution
• reduced dropped call rate
